During the programme period 2007–2013 rural development will be steered through the two parallel programmes defined for Mainland Finland and the Åland Islands. Previously this work was conducted under six separate programmes.
Rural development aims to:
- maintain the viability and vitality of rural regions
- enhance the environment
- ensure that renewable natural resources are used sustainably
A wider range of tools will be used to promote rural development, with these tools continuously enhanced to meet changing needs and exploit new opportunities. The programme itself addresses opportunities for improvements in all aspects of rural life.
The Rural.fi website presents examples of rural development projects that have already been realised in Finland.
